We know that you have lived in Berlin for some time, but what brought you here?
Love and stubbornness. When I came to Berlin 9 years ago, I wanted to prove that I could make it.
Impossibilities always motivate me to show that they are wrong.
So, moving to Berlin was a way to prove the stubborn part of me, that I could do anything, if I really want it. I would always find a way. Besides that, I feel that I simply belong in Berlin. I love this city. Sometimes it's not mutual, sometimes it's very intense. But I feel like myself here.
Tell us a bit more about yourself and what led you to start doing what you are doing?
Well, one of the quite obvious traits of my character is that I am a pretty introverted person. So,
hiding behind beautiful objects is also a way for me to express myself and to tell the world about myself, but in a more discreet way.
Actually it´s strange, because most glass objects I work with are transparent – I´d probably lose at hide and seek. I love being surrounded by beauty. I love to find out about the more subtle sides of beautiful objects. And I like to highlight these sides, put them in the spotlight, so they get a chance to be seen – in their 15 minutes of world-fame. Maybe that says something about me too.
To me working with glassware is simply fascinating – it brings excitement, glamour and beauty to my life. Every day I learn something new, every day there are new challenges on the hunt for treasures. Also, before I started still.life.design I was working with vintage clothing for a long time and I've been studying fashion design. So, I kind of always dealt with this process of giving old items a new meaning in the context of beauty.
Did you have any difficulties while starting Still Life Design? Tell us more about the process of setting up your own thing.
Yeah, sure. I am handling thousands of problems even now – I mean, we are all living and dying at the mercy of German bureaucracy in the end (haha). I know from the outside and especially through social media everything looks easygoing and flawless at the same time. That makes it even more complicated to deal with failure. But I am definitely a fuck-up - ask my friends! still.life.design was absolutely not successful from day one (also not day two and three).
For example, before I started using pink backgrounds for my product pictures, I tried 3-4 different visual styles. And not a single one worked. After each attempt I just wanted to close this business forever. But I'm impatient and stubborn at the same time – so I didn´t. In addition, every entrepreneur faces difficulties with bureaucracy, finding premises, building a reputation and communicating with customers. I'm no exception. For instance, at the moment I'm not super satisfied with my business situation. Due to various circumstances, for the last 6 months I had to move my store three times and of course this had a negative impact on in house sales. It frustrates me and obviously directly affects my work and the experience of my clients. Thank god, I have my customers, who even order my products, when things go wild. I am very grateful for this and I am happy to bring some glance of beauty to their lives in return. It may sound trite, but happy customers are the greatest success for me. Because I can share my idea of beauty with them. They basically get a tiny piece of Nika in their home (haha). In the end it´s all just small steps I´m doing. Sometimes they lead me through a beautiful flower meadow, sometimes through one of Berlin's famous construction sites. But I still really love what I do.
We know that originally you are from Ukraine, how do you feel about losing your country to war?
Well, I will try to answer briefly and not use too many sway words, although that would be most appropriate and honest. First and most important: I haven´t lost my country. In some way I have even rediscovered it. Besides that there are very strong emotions about what´s happening like anger, disbelief and sometimes even hatred. I am very lucky that most of my family is safe - some of them moved to Germany last year, some couldn´t. Russia is a fundamentally fascist country and acts as an imperialist aggressor. I think any rational arguments about this would be a waste of words. There are none.
If you would have to give our readers life advice in one sentence what would that be?
Ahahahaha, you're asking exactly the right person. Well, if I have got one advice, it's about love. Life is too short to deny yourself love, in all its forms. It is important to me to remind myself of that every day. The world has gone crazy – there are so many conflicts and an uncertain future. So, I think it should be everyone’s duty to love and be kind, to ourselves and everyone and everything around us. Love, empathy and strength are my advices. Wow, now I find even myself enlightened.
